Haderburg, Medieval castle in Salorno sulla Strada del Vino, Italy
The stone castle stands on a limestone cliff at 200 meters above the Adige Valley, commanding views over South Tyrol's wine country.
Built around 1150 as a strategic control point, Haderburg Castle remained a military outpost until its abandonment in the seventeenth century.
The Brothers Grimm included references to this fortress in their collection of tales, connecting the structure to Germanic folklore traditions.
Visitors can reach the castle through a 20-minute uphill walk from Salorno, with guided tours available from spring through autumn.
The castle's former chapel now houses a restaurant where guests can experience regional cuisine while surrounded by medieval architecture.
