San Giorgio Monastery, Former monastery on San Giorgio Maggiore island, Venice, Italy
The Renaissance monastery complex includes a library, refectory, grand staircase, infirmary, guest quarters, and cloisters designed by Andrea Palladio and Baldassarre Longhena.
Giovanni Morosini established the monastery in 982 after receiving the island as a donation from Doge Tribuno Memmo, transforming marshlands into a religious center.
The monastery refectory housed Paolo Veronese's The Wedding Feast at Cana painting until 1797, when Napoleon relocated it to the Louvre Museum in Paris.
The monastery buildings now serve as headquarters for the Cini Foundation, offering access to an extensive library and cultural events throughout the year.
In 1799, during the French occupation of Rome, cardinals gathered in the monastery's chorum nocturnis to elect Pope Pius VII.
