Great Cemetery, Cemetery and park in Vidzeme Suburb, Latvia
The Great Cemetery spans 22 hectares of land, containing numerous graves, memorials, and stone monuments representing different religious and ethnic groups of Riga.
Established in 1773 following Catherine the Great's decree, the cemetery operated as the main burial ground for Baltic Germans until its closure in 1957.
The burial ground contains three distinct sections designated for Lutheran, Roman Catholic, and Orthodox Christian communities, reflecting the religious diversity of Riga.
Visitors can reach the cemetery by taking tram number 11 from Barona Street to the Mēness stop, with access available throughout all hours.
The Russian Orthodox section, renamed Pokrov Cemetery, remains the single preserved part that avoided transformation into the Memorial Park during Soviet times.
