Submerged church of St. Nicholas

Stone walls and bell tower of St Nicholas Church stand partially submerged in Mavrovo Lake, creating a singular architectural sight against mountain backdrop.

Local workers completed the construction of St Nicholas Church in 1857, using marble and granite materials before the area transformed into Mavrovo Lake in 1953.

The original iconostasis and religious artifacts from St Nicholas Church were transferred to a nearby church before the waters of Mavrovo Lake covered the structure.

Visitors can access the church structure during summer months when water levels decrease, revealing the remaining architectural elements of this religious building.

The church walls maintain their structural integrity despite continuous exposure to lake water, making it one of few buildings that survive underwater conditions.
