Weerribben-Wieden National Park

The park spans 100 square kilometers of wetlands, containing interconnected canals, lakes, reed beds, and grasslands that form Northwest Europe's largest peat bog system.

Local communities extracted peat from this region until World War II, creating a network of small waterways and land strips that shaped the current landscape.

Reed cultivation remains an essential traditional practice in the park, with harvesters maintaining ancient techniques to supply materials for thatched roofs.

Visitors can reach the park's information centers in Ossenzijl and Sint Jansklooster to obtain maps and guidance for water activities and nature walks.

The park serves as a sanctuary for the entire Dutch population of large copper butterflies and Norfolk damselflies, indicating its ecological importance.
