Rein Abbey, Heritage site in Rissa, Norway
The monastery complex stands on an elevated position in the Fosen peninsula, northwest of Trondheim, featuring remaining structures among newer buildings.
Duke Skule Bårdsson established the Roman Catholic religious house for women in 1226, dedicating it to Saint Andrew after recovering from illness.
The monastery provided education opportunities for noblewomen in medieval Scandinavia, accepting unmarried women and those pursuing scholarly activities.
Visitors can access the estate grounds throughout the year by taking a ferry across Trondheim's fjord to reach the Fosen peninsula location.
The Hornemann family has managed the property since 1704, transforming it into an organic farm that now produces traditional Norwegian aquavit.
