Gimsøy Abbey, Medieval Benedictine monastery in Skien, Norway

The abbey occupied the eastern section of Klosterøya, an island within the Farelva river that flows through the municipality of Skien.

Established in the early 1200s by Dag Eilivsson and Ragnhild Skoftesdotter upon returning from the Norwegian Crusade to Jerusalem.

English masons constructed the stone convent, which received its first group of nuns from England and maintained religious practices for centuries.

The location of the former abbey sits on private property, with no remaining structures visible above the ground level.

This establishment holds the distinction of being the first monastery in Norway specifically founded for women religious communities.
