Cathedral of Funchal, Gothic cathedral in Funchal, Portugal

The Cathedral of Funchal displays white walls with volcanic stone accents and features three naves constructed using materials from Cabo Girão.

Built between 1490 and 1514 under King Manuel I of Portugal, the cathedral stands as one of the remaining structures from Madeira's early colonization period.

The cedar wood ceiling combines Gothic and Manueline styles, while the choir stalls present carvings of prophets and saints wearing 16th-century clothing.

The cathedral opens Monday through Friday from 07:15 to 18:30, Saturdays from 16:00 to 19:00, and Sundays from 16:15 to 19:00.

The choir stalls incorporate local elements into their decorations, including carved cherubs holding bananas and wineskins, reflecting Madeira's agricultural heritage.
