Castle of Castelo de Vide, Medieval castle in Santa Maria da Devesa, Portugal
The stone fortress stands atop a hill overlooking the town of Castelo de Vide, featuring a square tower that rises 12 meters on its southern side.
King Dom Dinis and his brother Afonso constructed the castle between 1280 and 1365, establishing it as a strategic defensive position in the Alentejo region.
The castle interior contains a museum exhibiting military artifacts, Roman pottery, Stone Age arrowheads, and archaeological findings from northern Alentejo menhirs.
The castle gates open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with visitors accessing the structure through the main entrance at the base of the hill.
The fortress connects to Fort of São Roque through an extensive line of bastioned walls, modified in the 17th century by French engineer Nicolau de Langres.
