Kuldīga, Historic Hanseatic city in western Latvia.

Kuldīga stands at the confluence of the Venta and Alekšupīte rivers, approximately 150 kilometers west of the Latvian capital Riga in the Courland region.

Established in 1242 by the Livonian Order of Knights, the city received town rights in 1378 and became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1368.

Kuldīga's Old Town received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2023, recognizing its well-preserved architecture and urban layout from the Duchy of Courland period.

Visitors can walk through narrow cobblestone streets, explore Saint Catherine's Church from the 13th century, and view the natural Venta waterfall spanning 240 meters.

The city features Europe's longest brick bridge, built in 1874 and stretching 164 meters across the Venta River, serving as a local cultural symbol.

Visiting Latvia: historical sites, nature, and Baltic towns

Latvia offers a diverse range of sites combining medieval history and Baltic nature. The country brings together different periods and landscapes: the Old Town of Riga with its Art Nouveau buildings, the castle of Cēsis, the beaches of Jūrmala and the extensive forests of Gauja National Park. Latvian cities preserve evidence of German, Swedish and Russian rule. Beyond the capital Riga, places like Liepāja with its military port or Kuldīga with its waterfall invite exploration. The coastal region extends for several hundred kilometres along the Baltic Sea. The natural landscapes include extensive forests, wetlands and lakes. Gauja National Park protects river valleys with sandstone cliffs and historic castle ruins. Rural areas display traditional wooden architecture and agricultural structures that have shaped life in the Baltic regions for centuries.
