Öland Bridge

The Öland Bridge extends 6,072 meters across the Kalmar Strait, connecting the Swedish mainland with the island of Öland through 155 concrete spans.

The bridge construction started after extensive discussions dating back to 1932, with Crown Prince Carl Gustaf officially inaugurating the structure on September 30, 1972.

The bridge transformed the island's population patterns by enabling residential growth in Färjestaden and reversing previous migration trends from Öland to mainland Sweden.

The structure features a 13-meter width accommodating vehicle lanes, while a separate bridge nearby serves pedestrians and cyclists connecting Svinö to the mainland.

The western section includes a 36-meter vertical clearance designed as a prominent hump, allowing large vessels to navigate safely beneath the concrete structure.
