The stadium, inaugurated on December 24, 1958, received its name from Franklin Essed, a notable Surinamese politician and forestry scientist.
The venue serves as home ground for multiple football clubs, including Leo Victor Cosmos, Royal '95, and the Surinamese National Military team SNL.
Located in southwestern Paramaribo next to the National Indoor Stadium, the facility underwent significant renovations funded by FIFA in 2018.
Beyond sports events, the stadium has hosted international music performances, including concerts by Kassav', Gentleman, and Atif Aslam.
