The settlement extends along the Savranka River at an elevation of 168 meters, occupying 794 square kilometers within the Podolia region.
After belonging to the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, Chechelnyk became part of the Russian Empire's Podolian Governorate and carried the name Olgopol from 1795 to 1812.
The settlement contains a former synagogue building that represents the Jewish population, which numbered 1,967 residents out of 7,000 total inhabitants in 1898.
The settlement maintains a population of 4,785 residents as of 2022 and operates within the UTC+02:00 time zone, shifting to UTC+03:00 during daylight saving periods.
Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector entered the world in Chechelnyk while her family traveled to escape from Russia in the early 20th century.
