Palace of Whitehall, Former royal palace in the United Kingdom
The Palace of Whitehall was the main residence of the English monarchs in London from 1530 until 1698.
Built for Cardinal Wolsey, the palace fell into the hands of King Henry VIII after Wolsey's fall from favor.
Once Europe's largest palace, it featured over 1,500 rooms and included a magnificent Banqueting House.
The only remaining part of the vast complex is the Banqueting House, accessible to the public.
Famous for its ceiling painted by Peter Paul Rubens, it represents a significant work of art in English history.
