Brownsea Island, Nature reserve island in Poole Harbour, England
The 500-acre island contains diverse landscapes with woodland, heathland, and salt marshes supporting numerous bird species and red squirrels.
The island changed ownership from Cerne Abbey monks in the 9th century through various hands including King Henry II and Queen Elizabeth I.
Robert Baden-Powell organized the first experimental Scout camp with 21 boys on the island in 1907, initiating the worldwide Scout movement.
Visitors reach the island through regular ferry services from Poole, with facilities including walking trails, a café, and information centers.
The northern section of the island maintains one of the few remaining populations of red squirrels in southern England.
