Pleiku Prison, former colonial prison in Vietnam

Welcome to the Pleiku Prison, located in Hoi Thuong Ward, Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province. This prison is known for being a place where political prisoners were held during the French and American periods before 1975, with many modern and brutal torture methods being applied here. On December 12, 1994, the Pleiku Prison was recognized as a national historical monument by the Ministry of Culture and Information with Decision No. 321/QD-BT. The Pleiku Prison is situated on a high red hill on Thong Nhat Street in Dien Hong Ward, Pleiku City, Gia Lai Province. In 1925, the French built this prison to imprison ordinary criminals, mostly ethnic people living in the Central Highlands. In 1940, when the revolutionary movement erupted strongly, it became a prison for imprisoning communist soldiers and patriots. The total area of the prison camp is about 1.6 hectares, surrounded by solid walls 3 meters high with barbed wire fences. There are two guard towers with armed soldiers stationed around the clock on the northwest and southwest sides, and a guard post on the east side. Visitors to the Pleiku Prison will have the opportunity to learn about the history of the prison and the inhumane treatment of political prisoners during the French and American periods. The prison has been preserved as a museum, with exhibits showcasing the torture methods used on prisoners, including waterboarding, electric shocks, and other forms of physical and psychological abuse. Visitors can also see the cramped cells where prisoners were held, as well as the punishment areas where they were subjected to hard labor and other forms of punishment. As you walk through the prison, you will feel the solemn atmosphere and the weight of history. The prison's walls and watchtowers stand as a testament to the cruelty and oppression that took place here. It is a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for freedom and justice. In conclusion, a visit to the Pleiku Prison is a must for anyone interested in learning about Vietnam's history and the struggle for independence. It is a powerful and emotional experience that will leave a lasting impression on visitors.
