Woold Homé, Slave trade memorial in Agbodrafo, Togo

Woold Homé is a former trading residence in Agbodrafo, Togo, that belonged to Scottish merchant John Henry Wood and was linked to illegal slave trade operations. The structure comprises multiple rooms, living areas, and underground cellars that functioned for storage and confinement purposes.

The residence was established in 1835 and functioned as a center for illegal slave trade until its end in 1852. The structures stand as a record of this dark chapter in the region's past.

The building reflects African-Brazilian architectural choices and houses the Well of the Chained, a site connected to rituals that took place before departure.

The site is open to visitors and allows exploration of both the main floors and underground areas. Wear comfortable shoes and allow time to move through all sections, as understanding the space fully requires visiting both levels.

The underground chambers were built with deliberately low ceilings to prevent prisoners from standing upright. This architectural detail reveals the harsh conditions deliberately imposed on those confined within.
