Suvarnabhumi Airport, International airport in Nong Prue Subdistrict, Thailand
Suvarnabhumi Airport is Thailand's largest international airport in Bang Phli, located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) east of central Bangkok. The terminal building spans multiple levels with passenger facilities, retail spaces, and dining establishments distributed throughout its concourses and waiting areas.
Development of the airport began in the early seventies of the previous century, but construction delays and economic challenges postponed completion until September 2006. After opening, it took over most international flights from Don Mueang Airport and became the main gateway for travelers to Thailand.
Traditional Thai design elements appear throughout the building, with each floor displaying specific motifs that represent different aspects of the country's heritage. Travelers often notice the decorative installations and artistic details that fill the space with local identity.
The Airport Rail Link connects travelers to central Bangkok, while shuttle buses, taxis, and car rental services provide additional transport options from the terminal. Arrival areas are organized by floor, with clear signage leading to ground transport options and public transit.
The control tower rises to about 130 meters in height and uses advanced cooling systems combined with natural light to minimize energy consumption. Visitors often notice the reflecting surfaces and architectural curves of the terminal, which give the structure a fluid, wave-like appearance.
