Pattani, Southern province on Malay Peninsula, Thailand
Pattani Province extends along the Gulf of Thailand coast, bordered by Narathiwat, Yala, and Songkhla provinces, covering 1,940 square kilometers of land.
The province emerged from the former Malay Sultanate of Patani Darul Makrif, which remained independent until Siamese forces conquered the region in 1786.
The population consists of 87 percent Muslim residents who maintain their Malay traditions while communicating in both Thai and Pattani Malay languages.
The province contains 12 administrative districts divided into 115 subdistricts, with transportation networks including highways, regular bus services, and railway connections.
The provincial seal displays the Phraya Tani cannon, a historical weapon cast in Pattani that currently stands at the Ministry of Defence in Bangkok.
