Ukrainian Carpathians, Mountain range in western Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Carpathians run through four regions of western Ukraine, forming a forested mountain chain with gently rounded summits reaching up to 2061 meters high. Broad valleys alternate with densely wooded slopes crossed by streams and small rivers.
The mountains served for centuries as a frontier between different European empires, shaping the migration routes of peoples from east and west. Fortified passes and old trade routes still testify to the role as a transit area between plains and highlands.
Wooden churches and decorated homesteads across the mountain region show building styles passed down through generations for centuries. During holidays, residents in some valleys still wear folk dress with geometric embroidery and handwoven belts.
Marked hiking trails connect shelters and villages at different elevations, with most routes easily walkable between spring and autumn. In winter, several ski resorts open their slopes and lifts, usually from December through March.
In the higher elevations grow primrose and gentian species that occur nowhere else in Europe and are native only to this mountain range. Botanists travel specifically here to observe these rare plants during their brief flowering period in late spring.
