Church of the Holy Spirit, Wooden Orthodox church in Potylicz, Ukraine.
The Church of the Holy Spirit is a wooden Orthodox church in Potylych, western Ukraine, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Carpathian wooden churches. It has an octagonal tower and onion-shaped cupolas, with walls built from horizontally stacked logs joined using traditional carpentry.
The church was built between the 16th and 19th centuries, reflecting the building traditions of Orthodox and Greek Catholic communities in the region. Over that long period, it changed hands between different religious groups, which shaped the way it looks today.
The interior holds icons and religious objects made by local craftspeople, reflecting the faith of the communities who worshipped here. These handmade pieces show the skill and devotion of people from the Carpathian region.
The church is hard to reach by public transport, so a private car or a local guide is strongly recommended for the visit. Combining it with other nearby wooden churches in the area makes the trip more worthwhile, as several of them are located within a short drive.
The entire structure was assembled without a single metal nail, relying instead on wooden pegs and traditional joinery to hold the logs together. This approach not only protected the wood from rust damage but also allowed the building to shift slightly with temperature changes, which helped it last longer.
