Taras Shevchenko Monument in Kovel, Bronze monument in Kovel, Ukraine.
The Taras Shevchenko Monument in Kovel is a bronze sculpture placed on a raised mound in a public park, close to the Church of St. Dmitry of Thessaloniki and the Turia River. The figure depicts the poet standing upright with one arm lifted, visible from the surrounding paths.
The monument was put up in 2005, at a time when many Ukrainian cities were erecting such memorials as a statement of national identity. Kovel joined that broader movement by choosing a central park location to give the tribute lasting presence in the city.
The figure stands with one arm raised, a gesture that many Ukrainians associate with defiance and dignity. Visitors who know his poetry often find the pose mirrors the tone of his most famous verses.
The park is freely accessible during the day, and the mound gives the figure good visibility from several angles along the paths. Pairing a visit with a short walk along the Turia River and a look at the nearby church makes for a natural loop through that part of the city.
The sculpture was created jointly by three Ukrainian artists, which is uncommon for a monument of this type. That collaboration is visible in the way different parts of the work carry a slightly different feel, from the treatment of the face to the folds of the clothing.
