Basingwerk Abbey, Cistercian monastery ruins in Holywell, Wales.

The stone ruins of Basingwerk Abbey display architectural features from the 12th and 13th centuries, including a chapter house and refectory with lancet windows.

Founded in 1131 as a Savigniac monastery under Ranulf of Chester, the abbey transformed into a Cistercian establishment in 1147 and maintained lands for 2000 sheep.

The abbey holds the chapter house where monks gathered for daily readings, and the parlour served as the designated space for conversation.

The site provides level access throughout main areas, bicycle securing facilities, and street parking nearby for visitors exploring the ruins.

The monastery marks the starting point of North Wales Pilgrim's Way, leading to Bardsey Island, while incorporating a water mill powered by Holywell stream.
