Allen Steinheim Museum, Natural history museum at Alfred University, New York.
The Allen Steinheim Museum features a crenellated stone structure with walls constructed from over 8,000 different rock specimens collected within three miles of campus.
Built between 1876 and 1880, Professor Ida Kenyon initiated the construction as a private residence before Jonathan Allen transformed it into a natural history museum.
The Federal Writers Project documented the museum's extensive collection of shells, mounted birds, Native American artifacts, pioneer tools, and early American pottery.
Located at 214 Eaklor Drive on Alfred University's campus, the building now stands ready for new purposes after serving as the Career Development Center.
The interior finishes display more than 800 wood species from local forests, complementing the geological diversity of its stone walls.
