Buck O'Neil Bridge, Road bridge in Kansas City, United States
The Buck O'Neil Bridge extends 2,764 feet across the Missouri River with three main spans measuring 451, 453, and 540 feet respectively.
The bridge commenced operations on September 9, 1956, as the Broadway Bridge and maintained toll collection until the Missouri Department of Transportation took ownership in 1991.
The structure received its current name in 2016 to honor John Jordan O'Neil, a former Kansas City Monarchs player who became the first African American coach in Major League Baseball.
The bridge carries U.S. Highway 169 and accommodates 50,000 vehicles daily, connecting downtown Kansas City to the Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport and Riverside.
The new bridge construction, initiated in 2021 with a budget of 220 million dollars, includes federal funding of 25 million dollars for regional transportation enhancement.
