Palais Strozzi

Palais Strozzi is a castle in Vienna's Josefstadt district with neoclassical features built in the 1800s. The building has single-storey wings and a forecourt that separates it from the surrounding street.

A countess from the Strozzi family bought plots of land in the late 1600s and built a summer house with a prominent architect. The palace later transformed from a private residence into a public institution serving different purposes.

The palace served as a teacher training school for girls, making it an important center for women's education in the district. This educational purpose still shapes how people view and use the building today.

The building now houses a research institute focused on academic work and study programs. Visitors should check in advance which areas are open to the public, as it is primarily used as a working institution.

During a severe cholera outbreak in the 1830s, the palace was temporarily converted into a hospital to help the city. This episode reveals how quickly the building was repurposed to serve public needs during a crisis.
