Seegrotte Hinterbrühl, Show mine in Hinterbrühl, Austria
The Seegrotte features an expansive underground lake system located 60 meters below ground level, covering a water surface of 6,200 square meters.
The site began as a gypsum mine in 1848, until flooding in 1912 led to its closure and subsequent transformation into a tourist attraction in 1930.
The underground galleries contain remnants of mining operations, including a chapel and areas that reflect the daily activities of past mine workers.
Guided tours lasting 45 minutes operate year-round, with visitors advised to wear warm clothing due to constant temperatures of 9 degrees Celsius.
During World War II, the mine served as a secret manufacturing facility for Heinkel He 162A jet fighters, employing workers from Mauthausen Concentration Camp.
