Aggstein Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Wachau, Austria
The fortress extends 150 meters along a rocky ledge, positioned 300 meters above the Danube River with steep drops on three sides.
Originally constructed in 1181 by the Kuenring family, the castle served as a strategic control point for river traffic until its decline in the 16th century.
The castle museum displays medieval artifacts and implements regular historical reenactments that demonstrate the daily routines of knights and nobility.
Visitors can reach the castle via the Westbahn train to Melk, followed by bus line 720, with operating hours from March through October, 9:00 to 18:00.
The fortress contains a legendary garden known as Rosengärtlein, where prisoners faced the choice between starvation or jumping from the cliff into the Danube.
