Aggsbach Charterhouse, Carthusian monastery in Aggsbach-Dorf, Austria.
The Aggsbach Charterhouse is a Gothic religious complex with a parish church topped by a tower and modified monastic buildings spread across the site. The structures maintain their medieval layout, with spaces originally designed for monastic life still visible in their arrangement and construction.
Heidenreich von Maissau founded this religious complex in 1380 as a Carthusian monastery. Emperor Joseph II dissolved it in 1782, ending the monastic community's presence at the site.
The buildings show how religious spaces gained new purposes over time as parts became a castle and others a residential rectory. Today the complex sits quietly in the village, serving as a tangible reminder of changing spiritual and domestic life.
The Carthusian Museum area opens from March through November, offering insights into monastic life. Guided tours can be arranged in advance to better understand the complex's history and layout.
The complex includes stations of a Calvary shrine positioned opposite the valley-facing section of the former monastery. These cross-way stations form a separate spiritual route that visitors can still explore today.
