Burgruine Eppenstein is a medieval castle ruin set on a hill above Weißkirchen in Steiermark, Austria. What remains are sections of the outer walls and the ring enclosure, with open views over the Mur Valley and the hills around it.
The castle was built around the year 1000 and served as the seat of the Eppenstein dynasty, who rose to become dukes of Carinthia in the 11th century. After the family died out in 1122, the structure passed through several hands before eventually falling into ruin.
Burgruine Eppenstein is known as the ancestral seat of the Eppenstein family, one of the most powerful noble dynasties in the early history of Styria. Walking among the remaining walls, visitors can get a sense of how this place once shaped the political life of the region.
