Tischofer Cave

Tischofer Cave is a natural cave in Kaisertal Valley with a large entrance opening and spacious interior chamber. The opening faces the mountainside, and the cavity extends significantly back into the rock formation.

People have used this cave for shelter and survival over many thousands of years, as evidence from excavations reveals. Later, during the Napoleonic era, it served as a hidden stronghold for local fighters defending their region.

The cave holds meaning as a refuge that shaped local identity during times of conflict and uncertainty. Visitors walking through can sense how communities relied on such places for protection and survival.

The walk to the cave from Ebbs climbs steadily through the valley and requires sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness. Metal railings along steep sections provide safety and support during the ascent.

Archaeologists discovered bone tools inside that were carefully crafted from cave bear remains by prehistoric visitors. These artifacts are among the oldest surviving implements of their kind found anywhere in the region.
