Bernstein Castle, Medieval castle and hotel in Bernstein im Burgenland, Austria.
Bernstein Castle is a fortified structure at 615 meters elevation in the Burgenland region, featuring Gothic architecture and thick stone walls. The grounds include a garden within the fortress walls and operate today as a hotel with nine individually appointed rooms.
The first fortifications here were built in the 12th century as a defensive stronghold for the region. The structure later resisted Turkish attacks in 1529 and 1532, maintaining its strategic importance throughout the centuries.
The castle was home to László Almásy, a Hungarian count whose life inspired international cinema. His presence there connects the fortress to stories of exploration and romance that still captivate visitors.
The castle operates as a hotel with overnight accommodations and offers guided tours from Wednesday through Sunday at 11:00 AM. Visitors should note that operations are mainly seasonal, running from April through October.
Inside the fortress is a noteworthy wine collection featuring Austrian and Southeastern European varieties, including Grüner Veltliner, Zweigelt, Furmint, and Tokaj Aszú. This selection reflects the wine traditions shared across Danube region borders.
