Burgruine Leonstein, Medieval castle ruin in Pörtschach am Wörther See, Austria
Burgruine Leonstein is a castle complex on a strategic hilltop near Pörtschach with stone walls, gateways, and foundations still visible. The remains show the typical layout of a medieval fortification with towers and defensive elements that overlooked the valley.
The fortress was erected in 1166 and served for centuries as a military outpost of the region. In 1390 it suffered destruction during an attack that left it in its final form.
The ruins show how medieval people sought protection and control over the valley by building at this exposed location. You can still see how the walls and gateways reflect the defensive methods that shaped daily life in that era.
Hiking trails lead from the Pörtschach town center up to the ruins, clearly marked and moderately steep. It is advisable to wear sturdy footwear and bring water, especially during warmer months.
Excavations at the site have uncovered hundreds of projectile fragments that document an early cannon attack. This discovery shows that by the 14th century modern firearms were already being used in an assault on this location.
