Rottenegg Castle

Rottenegg is a castle ruin with remaining walls and window frames decorated with stucco work. Original paint remains visible in places, offering clues about how the structure was once decorated.

The castle was built around 1289 to protect a trade route and was first owned by the Piber family. It later passed to the Landenberg and Wallsee families, who made changes to the structure over time.

The name Rottenegg comes from a local legend about a woman who was walled up in a red-painted corner. This dark tale still shapes how people in the region think about the place today.

The original defensive tower was transformed into a residence during the 16th and 17th centuries, gaining a distinctive onion dome. This architectural change shows how the building shifted from military to residential use.
