Dobl Transmitter, Communication tower in Dobl-Zwaring, Austria
Dobl Transmitter is a broadcasting facility in Dobl-Zwaring featuring a 156-metre lattice steel mast supported by structural elements at 113 and 73 metres above ground. The installation represents standard broadcasting infrastructure design from the 20th century.
Construction began in 1939 and finished in 1941, establishing a medium wave broadcasting station for Styria. The facility ceased transmitting in 1984 and transitioned to museum use.
The site holds protected monument status and reflects Austria's role in broadcasting technology development. Visitors can observe how such facilities shaped communication across the Styria region.
The site is managed by Gemeinde Dobl-Zwaring, which maintains the structure and operates its museum functions. Plan to visit during daylight hours and be prepared for outdoor conditions when exploring the grounds.
After broadcasting ceased, the entire facility was converted into a technical museum dedicated to radio communication history. This second life as a museum makes it a rare example of how industrial broadcasting infrastructure was repurposed.
