Schloss Wasserberg, Medieval castle in Gaal, Austria
Schloss Wasserberg stands at 918 meters elevation at the meeting point of Ingering and Gaalbach streams in the Seckauer Tauern mountain range.
The Diocese of Seckau constructed the initial fortress in 1275, which underwent substantial expansion during the 15th century with the addition of a second floor.
The castle chapel in the northern wing contains late Gothic frescoes discovered during restoration work in 1976, complemented by a neo-Baroque altar.
The Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz manages the castle, which now houses forest administration offices and rental apartments for residents.
A twelve-ton stone adorned with a bird sculpture by Father Raphael Statt occupies the center of the castle's courtyard.
