Filialkirche Gerlamoos

Filialkirche Gerlamoos, Protected church in Steinfeld, Austria

Filialkirche Gerlamoos sits at the forest edge above the village, combining a Gothic choir with a wooden bell tower from the 13th century. The main entrance features a Romanesque portal with double-stepped round arches, while the south side shows three rectangular Baroque windows.

The site was first mentioned between 1065 and 1075, originally known as palus Gerlinde. The building underwent major structural changes during the 16th and 17th centuries that shaped its current form.

Inside the church, frescoes created by Thomas von Villach show scenes from Saint George's story. These wall paintings are still visible today and give the interior its distinctive character, telling their stories to anyone who walks through.

The site is best explored on foot since it sits away from the main road and is surrounded by forest paths. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes and be prepared for variable conditions, especially after rain.

The high altar from 1705 depicts Saint George battling the dragon alongside a crucifix showing the Passion instruments. This combination of the worldly dragon fight with religious suffering imagery makes the altar a striking example of Baroque theological thinking.
