Castle Marchegg, Medieval castle in Marchegg, Austria.
Schloss Marchegg is a stone structure with a rectangular layout and four corner towers that combines baroque elements with strong defensive walls. The building shows how medieval fortifications were later converted into grand residential residences.
King Ottokar II founded the fortress before 1268 as a border fortification. Later, Count Paul Pálffy transformed it into a baroque residential castle.
The castle served as a center of regional power for centuries, and its rooms show how residents lived and governed here. You can sense how important this place was for people throughout the surrounding area.
The castle is open from April through November on weekdays, with guided tours offered in the morning and afternoon hours. It is best to check in advance whether any special conditions or restrictions apply.
The castle grounds house Central Europe's largest white stork breeding colony, with their nests clearly visible on the rooftops. During spring and summer, the storks bring particular activity and life to the grounds.
