Cycling Bridge VysoMarch, pedestrian and bicycle bridge over the river Morava connecting Vysoká pri Morave and Marchegg
The Cycling Bridge VysoMarch is a modern footbridge and bicycle crossing spanning the Morava River, connecting Vysoká pri Morave in Slovakia with Marchegg in Austria. The structure stretches over 270 meters (886 feet) with steel pillars reaching up to 17 meters (56 feet) high, featuring asphalt paving and safety railings, with information boards on both sides sharing details about the borderland's history and natural environment.
The area served as a crossing point over the Morava since the 13th century, with a ferry operating until after 1918 before crossing became difficult during the period of division. The new bridge opened in 2021, marking a return to direct connections between the two nations.
The bridge's name combines Vysoká pri Morave and Marchegg, reflecting its role as a link between two communities. Today, people from both countries use it to cross the border freely, experiencing the landscape and strengthening local connections through outdoor activities.
Access is straightforward by bike or on foot, with a 7 kilometer (4.3 miles) ride from Vysoká pri Morave or 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from Devínská Nová Ves on flat terrain, all well-marked. Walking paths run through meadows and floodplain areas where you can enjoy bird songs and watch butterflies along the way.
A dedicated butterfly trail runs near the bridge, as the floodplain forests are rich in butterfly species found in this protected landscape area. This unusual combination of crossing an international border while observing nature in a Natura 2000 protected site makes it a memorable experience for visitors.
