Matraswarte, Steel observation tower in Brand-Laaben, Austria
Matraswarte is a 17-meter steel observation tower located on the summit of Schöpfl mountain in Lower Austria at 893 meters elevation. The tower features an open platform that provides views across the surrounding forest landscape.
The tower was built in 1898 by the Austrian Tourist Club and named after Franz Eduard Matras. Its construction reflected the growing interest in outdoor recreation and mountain tourism during that era.
The tower is named after a local forester and serves as a gathering point for hikers exploring the Wienerwald region. People use it as a starting point for walks deeper into the surrounding forests.
The tower is reachable by a 45-minute walk from Forsthof following a clearly marked trail that passes through Klammhöhe. The path is open during all seasons, making it accessible year-round.
On clear days, visitors can see distant peaks including Schneeberg, Rax, and Ötscher mountains plus the Danube River from the platform. This expansive vista makes the tower special during excellent visibility conditions.
