Meerscheinschlössl, Graz, Baroque palace in Geidorf district, Graz, Austria
Meerscheinschlössl is a baroque palace in the Geidorf district with an H-shaped layout and a central courtyard on Mozartgasse 3. The facade combines architectural elements from different periods and shows how the building was repeatedly modified over centuries.
The building was created around 1580 as a summer residence for papal nuncio Malaspina. Between 1674 and 1708 three major renovations transformed it into its present form.
The building houses the Institute of Musicology at the University of Graz and preserves rare interior decorations from the Josephinian period. The rooms show how the university sustains music and scholarship within this historical setting.
Visiting is better on days when the institute is active, as it is a working university building and access is not always open. The exterior view from Mozartgasse gives an impression of the palace even without entering the interior.
The main hall impresses with elaborate stucco work and frescoes depicting Christian victories and the four seasons. These ornate decorations are a rare example of the rich interior design from the baroque period in Graz.
