Burg Neuhaus

Burg Neuhaus, Medieval castle in Sankt Martin im Mühlkreis, Austria.

Burg Neuhaus is a castle set on a hilltop in Sankt Martin im Mühlkreis that stretches across the ridge in a long formation. The structure sits at roughly 434 meters elevation and overlooks the point where two rivers meet below.

The castle started in the 13th century as a falconry base for bishops from Passau who controlled the region at that time. In the 14th century, the Schaunberg family rebuilt and expanded it into a proper fortified castle.

The castle shows different building styles stacked on top of each other from various periods, which you can see as you walk around it. The clock tower and the older stone sections tell stories of how the structure changed many times over centuries.

The exterior of the castle is open to view and provides good sightlines across the surrounding landscape. It remains privately owned and cannot be entered inside, but walking around the outside still gives you a sense of its size and position.

Beneath the castle sits an old watchtower that once provided views stretching for several kilometers along the Danube. This tower allowed people to monitor and control the river passage from a single strategic point.
