Starhemberg Castle, Medieval castle in Eferding, Austria.
Schloss Starhemberg is a stately home in the Upper Austrian town of Eferding, made up of several wings arranged around interior courtyards. The building combines a medieval core with later Baroque additions, reflecting changes made across different centuries.
The site began as a medieval fortification and was gradually transformed into a noble residence over the following centuries. The Starhemberg family played a key role in shaping its current form, particularly from the 17th century onward.
The castle hosts concerts and exhibitions that draw people from the surrounding region throughout the year. Some of the interior rooms still contain original furnishings that show how noble families lived and decorated their private spaces.
Visiting during daylight hours is recommended, as guided tours are the main way to see the interior rooms. Checking in advance when tours are available helps avoid arriving at a closed door.
Inside the castle there is a local history museum dedicated to Eferding, displaying objects and documents from different periods. This makes the building one of the few castles in the region that also functions as a keeper of town memory.
