Burg Stein im Drautal, Medieval castle in Dellach im Drautal, Austria
Burg Stein im Drautal is a medieval fortress sitting about 200 meters above the Drau Valley on a steep rock face at the northern slope of Jauken mountain. The complex consists of several stone buildings and a distinctive square tower that stands separate from the main palace.
The castle first appears in written records in 1190 under Haidenrich de Lapide. Ownership passed from the Counts of Gorizia to the Habsburgs and then to the Orsini-Rosenberg family in 1681.
The chapel in the northeast corner houses two Romanesque spaces from the 15th century with carved figures and painted vaults. These sacred rooms show how important religious life was to those who lived here.
The fortress remains in private hands under the Orsini-Rosenberg family and is not open to the public year-round. Visits are only possible during specific times of the year, so it pays to check ahead before planning a trip.
The square tower stands about 15 meters tall and is separated from the main building. Today it serves partly as a lookout point over the Drau Valley.
