Schloss Walkenstein, Medieval castle in Sigmundsherberg, Austria.
Schloss Walkenstein is an early Baroque castle in Sigmundsherberg with a rectangular footprint. It consists of four single-story wings surrounding a central courtyard with rounded arches, and features a square tower with a tent-shaped roof on its west side.
The castle first came into the hands of the Babenbergs in 1074 and later passed to the Kuenringer family in the late 13th century. A major reconstruction took place between 1660 and 1671, transforming its appearance significantly.
The castle once bore the name of a local noble family and served as their seat of power. The stone walls and courtyards reflect the importance such homes held in the region's rural society.
The grounds are accessible to explore the architecture from outside and view the courtyard with its distinctive arches. Visitors should allow time to walk around the various wings and observe the tower from different angles.
From 1893 to 1939 the castle operated as a cold water health resort with about 30 rooms for patients. This unusual use came to an end with the start of World War II.
