Schloss Walterskirchen, Medieval castle in Poysdorf, Austria
Schloss Walterskirchen is a four-winged castle estate near Poysdorf featuring Baroque architecture with a three-story southern section displaying balconies and gables. The buildings spread across expansive grounds and contain vaulted ceilings on the ground level and upper floors decorated with stucco ornamentation.
The castle first appeared in records in 1249 and suffered destruction during the Thirty Years' War in 1645. Ferdinand Freiherr von Hohenfeld oversaw its reconstruction afterward, transforming it into its current Baroque form.
The chapel on the ground floor shows Gothic and Baroque details that reflect different building periods. Visitors can see the craftsmanship and religious importance expressed through the room's architectural features.
The property remains a private residence of the House of Sachsen-Coburg-Koháry, so public access is generally not available. Prior inquiry or special occasions may occasionally permit visits.
A staircase dating from the 16th century occupies the northeast corner of the estate, offering rare insight into early building structures. This preserved element shows craftsmanship techniques from the pre-Baroque rebuild period.
