Enns – Landesfürstliche Burg, Medieval castle in Enns, Austria.
Enns – Landesfürstliche Burg is a fortified structure on a hill with two internal courtyards and Roman artifacts from ancient Lauriacum displayed in its arcade. The building shows different construction phases and combines medieval with Renaissance elements throughout its exterior and layout.
Emperor Frederick III ordered construction of a new fortress in 1483, with building work completed between 1565 and 1570 under Georg Gienger's supervision. The lengthy construction delays reflected the region's shifting political and economic conditions during this transitional period.
The castle functions as a music school today, merging historical architecture with active learning spaces. This use allows visitors to experience the building in its daily purpose and see how medieval rooms serve contemporary functions.
The castle is accessible through guided tours, and the Museum Enns 1212 showcases the city's history since opening in 2023. The hilltop location provides natural orientation for visitors, and its proximity to the city center makes it easy to reach on foot.
The castle grounds contain an English-style garden laid out in 1841 by Prince Vinzenz Auersperg, which was one of the region's early public green spaces. This garden offers a quiet contrast to the fortified structures and shows how the site evolved beyond its military origins.
