Pfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt, Gothic church in Imst, Austria
The Parish Church of the Assumption is a Gothic church in Imst featuring three naves of equal height and a tower that rises over 80 meters. The interior space is characterized by medieval wall paintings and houses a historic organ.
Construction started in 1460 under Master Heinrich, the choir was completed by 1475, and the nave was finished in 1493. The building was expanded and reworked over generations, with major restoration work happening in the early 1900s.
The wall paintings inside show religious figures alongside mining scenes, reflecting the importance of local mining traditions to the community. These combined images tell the story of how faith and daily work were intertwined in this region.
The church is open to visitors and provides information about the historic elements inside. It is advisable to be quiet when entering and to respect the peaceful character of the space, especially if services are taking place.
During restoration work in the early 1900s, workers discovered a western rose window that had been hidden and carefully restored it to reveal the original Gothic design. At the same time, an organ gallery was added to provide better space for musical performances.
