Construction of the cathedral began in 1075 under the reign of Alfonso VI of Castile and was completed in 1211.

It is a key destination on the Way of St. James, a major Christian pilgrimage route since the Middle Ages.

The cathedral is open to visitors daily with free admission, but donations are encouraged.

The cathedral houses the reputed tomb of Saint James the Great, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ.
