Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral Basilica of St. Tecla
Metropolitan and Primatial Cathedral Basilica of St. Tecla, Catholic cathedral in Tarragona, Spain.
The cathedral combines Gothic and Romanesque elements with a central nave, two aisles, and an octagonal bell tower reaching 70 meters in height.
Construction started in 1171 on a site previously occupied by a Roman temple from Emperor Tiberius time, a Visigothic cathedral, and a Moorish mosque.
The cathedral holds a Diocesan Museum established in 1914, containing historical artifacts and religious artworks from different periods of Spanish history.
The cathedral opens Monday through Saturday from 9:30 to 19:00 and Sunday from 14:30 to 19:00, with entrance fees ranging from 3 to 5 euros.
Archaeological excavations in 2001 revealed the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus beneath the cathedral's main nave.
